Longshots to Mull in US Open

Posted by Webster Washington on 6/15/2016 4:53:03 AM

The number of first-time winners in tournaments this year has told us something about the PGA tour: the fields are as balanced as they've ever been - anyone can win. Whether that translates into this week's U.S. Open at Oakmont remains to be seen. Here are players with handsome odds in US PGA latest betting:

Struggling

ADAM SCOTT won back-to-back tournaments in the WGC and Honda events in Florida in March, and you thought he had adjusted to his new putter. Then he had a horrible Masters and has had another tournament of over par golf since then. This isn't a course or tournament for a player who's on the downside of ups and downs.

RICKIE FOWLER was another who looked like a house afire when he won in Abu Dahbi at the start of the year. But he also burned out. He missed the cut in the Masters and has missed it in two other tournaments since then. Until he steadies his game, he won't see a majors leaderboard.

Coming On

SERGIO GARCIA has had a chance to rest since he outdueled Brooks Koepka in extra holes to win the Byron Nelson a month ago. He also had a second place in the Honda Classic in February. He's had four top 10s including two overseas. If the 36-year-old is re-stoking the fire he had a few years ago, he can be a threat.

BROOKS KOEPKA has a bit of a roll going with top 5s in his last two outings, the St. Jude and the Byron Nelson. Though he was over par through four rounds of the Masters, he knows his way around a leaderboard, having six top 10s this year.

US PGA Latest Betting

The U.S. Open is more mentally and physically demanding than any major. So I tend to favor young guys who have assembled enough consistency to endure. I like Jordan Spieth over Jason Day in the US PGA latest betting, simply because Spieth sits at 9-1, and that's hard to resist. Also, I'm currently alert to Spieth +120 in a head-to-head matchup with Day. But if you like a longshot, I'd say Koepka (33-1) is a value futures pick because he's been playing well lately.
