Can Spieth Catch Rory?

Posted by Charlie Smith on 5/10/2015 4:35:13 AM

The first round at TPC Sawgrass saw 2015 Master’s champion Jordan Spieth struggle a bit. Spieth shot a 75, while the man he is chasing Rory Mcllroy shot a 69 and had a relatively good round. These are two of the best young golfers in the game and their names are sure to be tied together for years to come.

Jordan Spieth is not only attempting to catch Rory this weekend, but in general, as it is Rory’s place in golf that Spieth looks to climb to. After years of Tiger Woods dominating the sport of golf, Rory Mcllroy finally overtook Woods as the number one golfer in the world. Some of this was Woods’ own doing by injuries and a personal life that was up in flames affecting his golf game, but never the less Mcllroy was taking the sport on by storm. Mcllroy is just 26 years old and already has won four majors in his young career. He is one of just three players to win three majors by the age 25. The other two? Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Mcllroy is in great company, but Jordan Spieth could be the new up and comer looking to take his spot.

Jordan Spieth just won his first major ever after taking home the green jacket at the Masters. He is barely legal to drink alcohol and already showed great poise in taking home the Masters victory. Spieth has great talent and a quiet confidence to him. He did not have his best round today and was headed to the driving range to work out some kinks. That shows that the kid also has a great work ethic. Rory Mcclroy has not been the number one player in the world for long and he may already have someone nipping at his heels. Jordan Spieth has plenty of work to do just to reach Mcllroys level, and who knows if he will ever get there. It appears he has a chance and it will be exciting to see what the next few years bring.
