Triple Crown News
While American Pharoah continues to show fitness in his exercises, one horse has dropped from Belmont Stakes contention, and another has been added.
Pharoah, hoping to complete a Triple Crown sweep, put in a jog around the one-mile oval at Churchill Downs on Thursday, after a walk around the barn the day before. Both exercise rider Jorge Alvarez and assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes liked his form. "He jogged almost every step of the way and felt strong," Barnes said. "He looked super good." American Pharoah was to gallop again Friday morning, and breeze on Sunday or Monday, before shipping to New York on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Conquest Curlinate has been dropped from consideration for the Belmont, which runs on June 6. Assistant trainer Norman Casse said the son of Curlin didn’t look good in training on Thursday, and he’ll be going for the Queen’s Plate in Canada on July 5.
The Truth or Else, a Kenny McPeek trainee, is a newcomer to the Belmont prospects list. McPeek said that two-time Belmont Stakes winner, Edgar Prado will have the mount. "My horse loves the Belmont track," McPeek said. "He has two starts and two wins on a dry track at Belmont. And he's out of a Colonial Affair mare (multiple Grade 3 scorer Lakenheath), so he should get the distance.”
Also at Belmont, Mubtaahij visited the main track and worked an easy half-mile as planned. He worked under jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr., who'll get the ride in the Belmont. "The important thing was just getting the jockey on him to give him a chance to get accustomed to the horse and get to know him," said Trevor Brown, assistant to trainer Mike De Kock. "Irad was pretty happy with the horse. He said he's ready."
The latest futures for the Belmont Stakes look like this:
American Pharoah -135
Carpe Diem +1300
Keen Ice +2200
Tale of Verve +2300
The Truth Or Else +3500
