Palhares Reemerges Against Michal Materla at KSW 36
MMA betting enthusiasts are well aware of the fact Rousimar Palhares has undergone a difficult stretch in which he has been effectively banished from elite-level MMA and declared a villain whom nobody wants to face for his reckless and grossly unprofessional actions in the cage.
Remarked as having some of the scariest BJJ skills in the game, and a thick, athletic frame, Palhares is also seen as the anti-sportsman after holding onto a kimura well after the referee's intervention of his fight with Jake Shields in August 2015. The foul in the act was so blatant that the Nevada State Athletic Commission banned him for two years and the World Series of Fighting stripped him of their welterweight title. But it wasn't his first offense.
He was suspended for ninety days following his heel hook submission win over Tomasz Drwal in 2010 and banned from the UFC, where he was 8-4, in October 2013 when he failed to release another heel hook submission in a timely way against Mike Pierce.
An extraordinary talent with an overarching malfunction, Palhares has been turned to the role of journeyman in Europe. His first bout since competing in WSOF came on May 22 at Venator FC -- the top Italian promotion. He was stunned by Scandinavian prospect Emil Meek's early onslaught and lost a first round KO.
In desperate need of a turnaround, Palhares draws a tough opponent in former KSW middleweight champion Michal Materla, who is seeking some degree of redemption of his own after a brutal first-round loss to the promotion's best product -- Mamed Khalidov -- in November of last year.
Materla, 32, is a good wrestler with the strength to handle some well-regarded fighters in Jay Silva, Kendall Grove, and Tomasz Drwal in his KSW tenure. He set himself back to his winning ways with a first round TKO win over Antoni Chmielewski to the delight of MMA betting fans in May.
Materla stands a chance if he can catch Palhares early, or do something to make him reluctant to shoot for takedowns. The Pole's takedown defense will play an important role in this fight but I think a fighter like Palhares will be too industrious to lose a fight at this level if it goes beyond two rounds, even if he has to strike a little or somehow winds up on his back against a big guy.
