Game 3: Warriors Rally Falls Short

Posted by Webster Washington on 6/11/2015 9:54:31 AM

For the first time in seven quarters, Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors gave notice that they may be back to their old form. It was too late to salvage Game 3 of their NBA championship series with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. But the Warriors rallied after being behind by as many as 20 points in the second half, and were on the brink of pulling out a win, before surrendering, 96-91.

Now the Warriors head into Game 4 facing a 2-1 deficit, and the Cavaliers are happy to have another win in their pocket as the bumps and bruises of the playoffs continue to mount.

Naturally it was LeBron James who led the way for Cleveland. He scored 40 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. But his new sidekick, Matthew Dellavedova, contributed 20 points as the Cavs again outshot the Warriors 46 percent to 40 percent.

The bad news for the Cavaliers is that their already-depleted roster has even more casualties to consider. Dellavedova suffered severe leg cramps and had to be treated with IVs after the game. Iman Shumpert took a blow to his left shoulder on a pick during the first period and, though he came back in, was ineffective the rest of the way. The status of both players was to be determined Wednesday.

The further bad news for the Cavs is that the Warriors’ Curry finally came around, leading the team’s furious rally. He scored 17 of his 27 points in the fourth period and finished shooting 7 of 13 from the three-point line. The Cavs led by 20 points midway through the third period, and were up by nine with 51 seconds left. But Curry came lose on enough three-pointers to cut the lead to three with 18 seconds left. James free throws finally clinched it for the Cavs.
