San Antonio Spurs Era Ends

Posted by Jay Sanin on 5/15/2016 4:36:32 AM

Just a week ago, the San Antonio Spurs were massive favorites to advance past the Oklahoma City Thunder and reach the Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors. But in spite of those odds, the Spurs fell apart and ended up dropping the series to Oklahoma City, and now an era of one of the greatest groups of players ever assembled is over, leaving the Spurs with some questions to answer going forward.

Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili Era Over

Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili combined to be one of the greatest trios in the history of the NBA, winning multiple championships and contending for many more with alarming consistency. They each filled a vital role for a championship team, with Parker scoring and distributing brilliantly, Ginobili serving as the deadly shooter and penetrator, and Duncan doing the dirty work without ever raising so much as one complaint with his role.

It was shocking watching them fall apart so rapidly, going from up two games to one to dropping the final three games of the series, including on in San Antonio where they had lost just once all season before dropping two games there in this series. The mood went from excitement to see them take on the Warriors in the conference finals to somber appreciation for a prolific trio that will be remembered with the all-time greats.

New Era Begins

While the Spurs' live betting odds shifted along with their fortunes in this series, the reality stands that they need to usher in the new era of San Antonio Spurs basketball, which will rely on their younger talent to usher them to the same positive results that they have experienced with the Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili days that have been so good to them.

This new era will be led by Kawhi Leonard, who is a better two way player than Parker or Ginobili have ever been. He'll be joined by LaMarcus Aldridge, whose offensive ability from the power forward position is unmatched in this day and age, as well as Danny Green, who is a deadly three point shooter on his day. It will be interesting to see how quickly those three can get the Spurs back to the NBA Finals in the same way their mentors did.
