Futures Betting Odds for Super Bowl 50

The Super Bowl futures betting odds present many intriguing betting opportunities with the playoffs starting this weekend.

In the SportsBetting.ag Sportsbook, the Super Bowl futures bets include odds to win the Super Bowl, odds to win either the NFC or AFC title, which conference will win the Super Bowl and which division within a conference will win the Super Bowl.

Futures bets can be placed from well before the season until the AFC and NFC championship weekends. Generally, the earlier the bet is made the better the odds of winning more money. A profitable time to make a futures bet is when a team slumps in the middle of the season. When the Pittsburgh Steelers lost consecutive games to Kansas City and Cincinnati in Weeks 7 and 8, their odds to win the Super Bowl went from +3000 to +4000. That’s when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was out with a knee injury, leaving backups Michael Vick and Landry Jones under center. With Roethlisberger healthy again, Pittsburgh reeled off a 6-2 record in the second half of the season to make the playoffs.

Pittsburgh’s odds to win the Super Bowl were now down to +800 at the SportsBetting.ag Sportsbook entering its wild-card playoff game against Cincinnati this weekend.

The following provides more detail about the Super Bowl futures odds:

Betting Odds to win Super Bowl 50

The top three favorites to win the Super Bowl heading into this weekend’s games were New England (+350), Arizona (+400) and Carolina (+450). The three teams with the longest betting odds to win were Houston (+5000), Washington (+3300) and Minnesota (+3300).

Arizona opened around +3000 to win the Super Bowl 50 at the end of last season. That number was reduced almost every week of the season as the Cardinals finished with a 13-3 record. The Cardinals earned a bye to the divisional round will host the highest-seeded winner from the NFC wild card round.

Kansas City was the hottest team entering the playoffs, winners of 10 straight games. When the Chiefs started 1-5, their Super Bowl odds went from +3000 at the start of the season to +20000. After their win streak to finish 11-5 in the regular season, their odds were reduced all the way to +1600. Imagine the excitement of a fan who bought a futures ticket on Kansas City after its 1-5 start?

about Seattle? The two-time defending NFC champions opened as the Super Bowl 50 favorites last January. They were at about +450. After an 0-2 start, the Seahawks’ Super Bowl futures odds increased to +800. After their 4-5 start with a loss at home to Arizona, the odds ballooned to +1600.

Seattle closed the regular season on a 6-1 run and earned a NFC wild card spot, playing at Minnesota as a 4-point road favorites Sunday at the SportsBetting.ag Sportsbook. The Seahawks entered the playoffs at +500 betting odds to win the Super Bowl, almost completely back to where they were last January.

Betting Odds to win AFC, NFC titles

The odds to win each conference reflects which teams are the favorites to represent the AFC and NFC in Super Bowl 50.

The three teams with the best odds to win the AFC at the start of the playoffs included New England (+160), Denver (+225) and Pittsburgh (+450). The longshot was Houston (+2500). Those in-between were Cincinnati (+800) and Kansas City (+750) .

The three teams with the best odds to win the NFC were Arizona (+185), Carolina (+185) and Seattle (+275). The longshots were Washington (+1800) and Minnesota (+1600). Green Bay (+1000) was closer to being a longshot than a favorite despite having Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.

Which conference will win the Super Bowl: AFC or NFC?

Interestingly enough, although the NFC has three teams with long odds to win their own conference -- Washington, Minnesota and Green Bay, the conference has better odds to win the Super Bowl than the AFC. The NFC is favored to win the Super Bowl with odds at -135 compared to the AFC at +115. That’s because the NFC is so top heavy with Arizona, Carolina and Seattle. The AFC has a couple of juggernauts in New England and Denver, but after that, the odds are a cut below and more balanced with Pittsburgh, Kansas City and Cincinnati. Therefore, although New England is among the teams with the best odds to win the Super Bowl, the wise move overall is to take an NFC team because of more opportunities to win. You can’t go wrong betting on Arizona, Carolina or Seattle. If you pick a team other than New England and Denver in the AFC, you’re taking a greater risk. For those who like to bet on the longer future odds, taking an AFC team to win Super Bowl 50 other than the Patriots and Broncos might not be such a bad thing.

Which division will win the Super Bowl?

This futures bet for which division has better odds to win the Super Bowl is of course reflective of the teams in that certain division.

The AFC East (of which New England hails from) is tied with the AFC West (Denver) for the best odds to win the Super Bowl at +400. The NFC South (Carolina) is at +450 followed by AFC North (Pittsburgh and Cincinnati) at +550.

It’s interesting that although the NFC overall has better betting odds to win the Super Bowl, the AFC East as a division has the best odds to go all of the way because of New England.

The worst betting odds belong to the AFC South (Houston) at +5000, NFC East (Washington) at +3300 and NFC North (Green Bay and Minnesota) at +1400. Despite the NFC North having double the chance to win the Super Bowl with two teams, it’s obvious the oddsmakers do not think much of the chances for the Packers or Vikings to go all the way.
