Rio 2016 Features Fast Version of Rugby

Posted by Webster Washington on 8/10/2016 9:52:40 AM

OK folks; for the Olympics, this is as close as it gets to American football. It's rugby, and it's the sevens version. That means seven per side playing seven-minute halves. It's fast, wide open and full of upsets. That's why the Rio 2016 betting futures are relatively close, despite the dominance of two teams - New Zealand and Fiji. This is the first time since 1924 that rugby has been part of the Olympics, so winners go down in history.

Those who have had a channel-surfing glance at rugby may be thinking Union rugby, which has 15 players per side and longer games. Sevens is a lot different, but with the same basic rules of play. For American football fans who've never seen rugby at all, just picture one big option attack with no forward pass. Sevens allows the sport to convert nicely to short duration tournament formats such as the Olympics. In Rio, the teams include Spain, Brazil, Japan, Kenya and the United States, along with more traditional rugby powers, Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa, Britain, Australia, Argentina and France. There will be three groups with four teams each, and teams will play two games a day over three days.

Favored Fiji

Rugby is the national sport in Fiji, and since no one from the Pacific island nation has ever won an Olympic medal in any sport, bringing home a gold would carry historic value. The national sevens team has the world-class players to do it. Fiji has won three of the ten World Rugby Sevens Series this year, and were semifinalists in the last Rugby Sevens World Cup in 2013. New Zealand won that World Cup and has also won three of the Series this year. Look for Australia, South Africa, Great Britain and even the United States to come with strong teams, too.

Rio 2016 Betting

In Rio 2016 betting futures, Fiji is the favored team at a tasty +200. They’re followed by South Africa (+225) and New Zealand (+250), which indicates the closeness of the competition. Even more value lies with Great Britain (+1200) and Australia (+1400). Also look for spreads in each game in the Rugby listings. Almost anyone could win it, so spread the money to a couple of those, and enjoy the action. Bet now.
